Deputy Foreign Secretary Edgardo Riveros participated this morning in the Seminar "Lessons Learned from the Peace Operation in Haiti", which was held at the Joint Center for Peace Operations in Chile (CECOPAC).

The Undersecretary spoke in the first panel along with his defense counterpart, Marcos Robledo. During his intervention, the authority referred to peacekeeping operations from the external relations point of view. In that regard, he recalled that they form part of our country's foreign policy, which is committed to international peace and security.

In this context, he stressed that Chile is part of the 50 original states of the United Nations, an organization that achieved a ban on the use of force as an instrument of foreign policy. "This is a mutation that is essential to keep in mind," said the Undersecretary "because by prohibiting the use of force as an act of international action by States, the axis is placed on the maintenance of international peace and security.

He also added that it is no coincidence that over the past 23 years Chile has been elected a non-permanent member of the Security Council three times. "It is, in a way, the recognition of what has been Chile's commitment to multilateralism and particularly to the United Nations".

However, he recalled that this action does not take place only within the framework of the UN. "We have a special link with the European Union (EU), a special agreement that is in full force. Somehow EUFOR-ALTHEA, the peace operation in Bosnia, has to do with engagement with the EU, with which we have an Association Treaty, covering the economic, trade, political and cooperation fields".
