The 29th Assembly of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, which is currently taking place in Paris, re-elected Chile to be a member of its Executive Council during the 2017-2019 period.

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission was created in 1960 to facilitate oceanographic research. It currently has 148 Member States.

The objective of the commission is to encourage international cooperation and coordinate research programs, services and generate capacity, all towards the goal of knowing more about nature and oceanic resources and the maritime processes in the coastal zone and turning this knowledge into better management, sustainable development, protection of the oceanic environment and the process of election making to its member States.

This election is a recognition to the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service from the Army (SHOA), which is a focal point for IOC in Chile after they worked closely with UNESCO's mission in Chile and the Chancellery so that Chile would win its candidacy.

This Committee represents a privileged space for the promotion and protection of Chilean oceanic interests within the frame of our country's Oceanic Policy.
